Paternity Testing

This quarter, the spotlight shines on Paternity Testing Corporation, a family-owned and operated company that will celebrate 12 years of business in May. PTC's primary focus is DNA analysis for paternity cases around the world. The company has even been used by television's Montel Williams Show, Jerry Springer Show and Sally Jesse Rafael Show. In addition, PTC is called upon by law enforcement agencies that need help with DNA evidence. When there is a rush, the Boone County Sheriff's Department often brings DNA cases to PTC. PTC also performs DNA analysis and criminal paternity cases for many Sheriff's Departments statewide.

PTC, located at 300 Portland Street across from Columbia Regional Hospital, is a busy place. Its 35 employees performed over 14,000 paternity tests last year.

PTC's tests have a 99.99 percent minimum accuracy rate and document 15 genetic markers of a child's identity. The lab is one of only approximately 44 accredited labs in the United States.

Company president Kim Gorman is a graduate of the University of Missouri-St. Louis with a degree in chemistry. She and husband Joe were living in St. Louis when her daughter Shelly was a student at MU. It was during that time that they realized Columbia would be the perfect place to start their business. Today, Joe serves at PTC's general counsel, Shelly is vice president and her husband John Beckwith is the business manager.

The Gormans are involved with REDI's efforts to promote life sciences companies in mid-Missouri. They have a good working relationship with MU and know that they can lend their experience to help others who wish to operate in Columbia.
